For Teachers
Overview: Dr. Rosie in the Classroom

Lesson plans

Teachers can use our integrated, standards-aligned lesson plans to spark discussion and engage the natural curiosity of young learners. The lessons are not sequential and can be taught individually or as part of a larger unit. Every lesson plan includes science concepts applicable to the lesson.

Teachers, administrators, and curriculum coordinators can use the contact form to request FREE online or in-person support for the implementation of any lesson plan or hands-on activity.

Note: Rosie dreams of being a veterinarian and going around the world to help different kinds of animals. Each animal has an illness or injury, which Rosie treats with natural remedies.
Many parts of Rosie’s dream are based on what happens in the real world. For example, animals do get the same kinds of illnesses and injuries as people. In addition, some veterinarians are trained to help animals in the wild. They travel to see their patients by motorcycle, helicopter, ATV, and scuba. These veterinarians have gone to school to learn how to diagnose and treat many different kinds of animals safely.  They may use pharmaceutically produced antibiotics and antifungals (for infections), antihistamines (for allergies), and anti-inflammatory medications to treat pain, swelling, and fever. They may also use the natural treatments shown in the book.  For minor afflictions, they may use medical-grade Manuka honey, topical Aloe vera gel or cream, sterile saline solution (salt water), and a variety of hot and cold therapies. This book only shows natural treatments used by veterinarians to make the story relatable and accessible to children.

The What Do Animals Need? lesson addresses both content and SEL (empathy) learning targets. While the lesson can be taught at any time, it is particularly suitable for the American Humane Association’s Be Kind to Animals Week (the first week of May every year) See: Be Kind to Animals – American Humane. This humane-themed lesson was a featured article in The Latham Letter.
